Using the Roman numeral system

Have students present how they would add or subtract if they could only use the Roman numeral system! This is a fun classroom exercise that will get students to begin to speak mathematically and to present their thoughts in an organized manner.

Also, having students go through this exercise will further help solidify for them what it means to add and subtract — that it is not just a mechanical process. Too often, the meaning behind the process is lost. This has a snowball effect because as they take more math classes, they have reinforced in their minds that they have to become good only at mechanics.

Here is a write up for instructors interested in using this exercise. Leave your comments and let everyone know what you think! If you have tried this in your classroom, tell us about the experience!
